INFEST "DISCOGRAPHY"
millions of imitators.
but for some reason none can get close to this genius.
some of the most genuinely pissed off music ever put on wax.
i like to think that i'm afraid of no man but if i came across joe denunzio (vox) in a back alley somewhere i would hide behind a dumpster.
he wasn't a lil' skinny kid trying to sound like a tuff guy.
he was a fuckin' brute!
a gallute!
just listen to a song and imagine having him pissed at you.
no thanks.
real deal indeed.
furious is the best way i can describe it.
i never get tired of this.
some of the best riffage ever.
my favorite 7 inch records have their name on it.
ARRRRRGH!

STEVE REICH "DIFFERENT TRAINS, ELECTRIC COUNTERPOINTS"
amazing.
kronos quartet plays on the trains.
pat metheny on electric counterpoint.
that shit makes me... i don't even know.
beautiful.
TRAINS
RIKK AGNEW "ALL BY MYSELF"
holy shit....!
if you don't know about this cat then you need to listen to more punk.
ADOLESCENTS, CHRISTIAN DEATH, D.I. were all better when he was in them.
so imagine what this guy sounds like when he takes over all instrument duties and vocals.
imagine no more.
check it out for yourself.
my hero...

THE RADIO DEPT. "PET GRIEF"
a favorite album of mine.
imagine if the pet shop boys started in the 2000's rather than the 80's.
and a much deeper but very soothing voice.
this works when you have a sexy mamacita over the pad.
dim the lights to this bitch right here.
WORST TASTE IN MUSIC
NO SCHOOL FOR ME
on occasion i'll find myself in the midst of genius.
no shit!
today, for example, on a break from work i found myself at a coffee bean in lake elsinore.
drinking a blended mocha outside on the patio sitting next to my dad as he drank his caramel.
when some strange guy with long hair, dark glasses and a tattoo of paint palette on his elbow asked if he could sit next to me.
he was already in the patio sitting on a bench at the other end so i was like, "okay". (weirdo)
so he begins to talk and i start to smell the alcohol on his... everything.
"where do you go?" he says.
"what?"
he continues, "where do you go to school?"
"i don't."
"is it because of your money situation?"
"yes."
then he asks my dad., "how about you?... oh shit...you're old as fuck."
i look at him with a frown but secretly bustin' up inside.
he continues, "so... how old are you?"
"29"
"yeah, me too. i'm 26."
so now, i'm like what the hell is up with this fuckin' guy.
at this time my dad is like, "ok. vamonos"
that's when he proceeds to show me that there is a god out there.
somewhere.
"hey, listen, man. don't let them tell you when recess is."
we get in the truck and head back to work.
i just start to bust up laughing and my dad looks at me like, "wtf?"
"are you sure he didn't give any of what he was having?"
i said no while still laughing.
"...oh shit... you're old as fuck."

WARZONE "DON'T FORGET THE STRUGGLE DON'T FORGET THE STREETS/ OPEN YOUR EYES"
"forget it, ray ain't even in the fuckin' studio."
"where the hell is he?"
"he went to get the warzone women."
"WORD!!!!"
"yo, forget about that because this jam is gonna bust the house down."
1,2,3...!
it doesn't get much better than this when it comes to old school hc.
IT'S YOUR CHOICE
GNAW THEIR TONGUES "Die Mutter Wahlt Die Todtenkleidchen"
(the owner of the house, szandor, put this out.)
anyway... this is one of the best album i've heard so far this year.
netherlands is where this music comes from and it comes from one person, of course.
a brutal mix of black, doom metal and even that shoegaze stuff.
i swear "eaten by the messenger of the light" has parts that could have been on "loveless".
enjoy

THE MANSON FAMILY- AN OPERA
you want strange?
you want to recite the coolest quotes ever to find their way to your radio?
you want to be the hit of the party when they ask for obscure albums?
plain and simple... do you want genius?
well here you go!
i first came across this gem of all gems courtesy of an ex and the pick 'n' save in fontana.
oh yes.
it was in pick 'n' save (now big lots) that this tape was purchased for 1.99 in '97 .
and its been amazing and spooking this shit out of me ever since.
john moran, the young mastermind of this masterpiece, was only 24 when he was commissioned to make this by the lincoln center of performanig arts nyc!
this album is john moran's interpretation of the events that were caused by charles manson and his accomplices.
tracks like "subject: the beatles", "subject: lynette (squeaky) fromme" and "subject: charles manson (at spahns ranch)" are movments that still puzzle my head.
just amazing.
when amoeba records opened up in hollywood i was like," ok. let's see how cool this record store is. if i find the manson family- an opera than its a sick store."
first thing i see as i walk in the used section!
this time for .99 cents!
one of the happiest days ever.
LIKE A BLADE OF GRASS IS... ON A BIG WIDE HILL
EMBRACE
you just have to ask yourself...
can ian mackaye ever do wrong?
in this, his band after minor threat, he is joined by the his brothers ex band mates (the faith) in, my opinion, one of the best records ever!
i never heard punk this way when it first graced my ears.
and let me tell you, you don't get more punk than this.
these songs were greatly structured in such a short amount of time (the band existed from the summer of '85 to the spring '86.
fuckin' amazing.

this album was the perfect soundtrack to fall in love to.
it also reminds me of the movie BLADERUNNER.
my autumn equinox gift to you all.

AMBER ASYLUM "THE NATURAL PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE"
in one of my top 3 shows ever, this band played.
i show up to the showcase theater with sal.
we walk in to be assaulted by some dudes from santa fe, nm in the form of some loud ass hardcore punk.
dreads flying everywhere as they flew everywhere themselves.
this is the first time i saw logical nonsense.
as a matter of fact, it was the first time i saw any of these bands.
up next was a three piece.
huge drum set up, a keyboard and a guitar.
huh?
the drummer looked like jesus and played like the devil himself, i forgot how the keyboard player looked like but that has to be because of my fixation on the ordinary lookin' guy that was on vocal and guitar duties.
i've never seen that kind of passion before!
he sounded scarier than david vincent! (again, i was 14)
he was screamin' with all of his soul, with every fiber of his being.
swallowing the mic as he sang!
sweating like he's just been in a 15 round boxing match.
from that day on i've been a devote desciple of today is the day.
after they were done and my heart started to calm down i started to think, "okay, whats next? let's go come on!"
being in the pit expecting the last band to go on i notice a cello on the stage.
huh?
then a beautiful redheaded metal chick wearing a venom shirt with cut off sleeves touches my shoulder to say excuse me as she walked towards the stage.
she gets on and picks up a violin!
the stage fills up with the cello player, another violinist, a drummer, and some dude on the ebow guitar.
what the hell?
i did not expect to be blown away the way i did after today is the day.
wrong!
they played as beautiful and powerful as any of the other bands that night.
haunting is the best way to discribe it. (i don't want to get into how it made me travel transcendtally. that would be gay.)
simply awesome. and i don't you use that word ever. (thanks to eddie izzard)
after all that was a band called... neurosis?
yeah thats right.
neurosis.
huh... almost forgot about them.
they were ok.
ha
definitly in the top three shows list.
i like to think i lost my virginity to that show.
the songs played that night by kris force, martha burns, blaise smith, timothy north and steve von till (that guy on ebow) are in this album.
beautiful to the max

BOREDOMS "SOUL DISCHARGE"
i remember seeing, in one of sal's many metal maniacs, an article on some japanese bands.
two in particular. s.o.b and the boredoms.
i was like, "what the hell is goin' over there? metal in japan?".
i was 13 or 14, man, gimme a break!
i saw that there was a girl in the boredoms.
which fascinated me since i've always liked "rockin' chicks".
there was no internet available to paupers like us in those days so that was it... some cool looking bands from japan that surely was hard to get a hold of any of their records in fontana.
one day sal told me he was going to rhino records in claremont.
i asked my parents if i could go and they said no.
bummed out i thought i would just give sal 2 bucks so he could bring me back something from the used tape section.
i always trust sal to have something cool on deck.
but nothing could have prepared me for what was to come.
i'm not sure if it was later on that same day or the next but when i saw him i said, "hey, where's my tape?"
he went inside his house and came back out with "soul discharge"!
holy shit!
that cool looking japanese metal band.
in my hands.
he was like, "yeah, man, you'll like it. its noisy."
noisy metal?
put the tape in the deck, took a breath, pushed play and was blown to smitherfuckinreens!
but this wasn't metal!
this was punk like a muthafucker!
the weirdest punk i've ever heard!
i loved it!
i got lost in it!
everything was perfect here... the two drums on the same beat but not, guitar, bass and those vox!
HOLY SHIT THOSE VOX!!!
both eye and yoshimi!
!!!!!!!!
ok.
calm.
this is the japanese release that came out in '99.
difference between this one and my '89 tape is 5 extra track.
the first and last four.
have fun with this.
play it super loud and scare the shit out of yourself.
my most prized tape that i own.
SOUL DISCARGA
CRASS "PENIS ENVY"
oh how i loved my high school sweet heart's bedroom.
experiencing so many things like smoking weed with a girl, kissing after smoking weed with a girl, getting my legs naired (not too proud of that), listening to lil' adam run around the house talking about lizards, and listening to great tunes.
i would bring over maybe some sonic youth, swirlies or skinny puppy. we would blaze it up and than mack down.
after a while, if it started to get heavy, she might put on some "le sexorcisto", megadeth or some "pretty hate machine" just to keep the mood right.
but one day she put on this tape that had a familiar symbol on it.
a symbol that i had only seen once before.
in sal's room, my neighbor at the time, on an album called "christ the album".
i probably said something like, "heeeeey is this crass? where's steve ignorant? this is the shit, let's make out!"
all i remember after that was that we loved to make out to that record... cocteau twins came later.
oh btw... this is my favorite punk album.
baddest shit they put out, in my book.
and not just because all the mackin' either.
MAKE OUT

BAL-SAGOTH "BATTLE MAGIC"
the third song "a take from the deep woods" is the first song i heard from these dudes.
it was on a comp. that i came across in '99. even now i still listen to it and picture rocky training for the fight of his life. a "gonna fly now" for metal dudes.
people always clown at first, saying, "hahaha! what the fuck is this?" but it never fails... they end up asking me later on in the car, "hey... put that dumb ass fantasy black metal band... that shit is bad as fuck."

NOSFERATU
this is my guilty pleasure.
cheesiest vocals.
cheesiest guitar riffs
cheesiest keyboards
but the the solid bass lines and drum programming give me a boner.
aww who am i kidding?
all those cheesy attributes give me a boner too.
i might get clowned for the rest of my life for this one but hey... i know you like something "worse".
"vampyres cry" is the fuckin shit.

FRANCE GALL
soooo... you want more loungy stuff?
she's the reason i like blonde's now.
LOUNGE LEGENDS
POUPEE DE SON
ASTRUD GILBERTO AND WALTER WANDERLEY
bring out the cosmopolitans, the olives, those lil' wienies and some cigars. 'cause we're gonna lounge like a mu'fucker. oh yeah! chaise lounge chairs and all. all the guys shooting the shit about how we've been bangin' our secretaries and how we like allen ginsberg. the girls talkin' about how they've just remodeled their living rooms. which i think is code for how they're boning the milk man. that handsome devil.
BUT ITS ALL GOOD!
because "Nega Do Cabelo Duro" is playing in the background.
and in a couple of minutes we are all gonna fuck the shit out of each other and then realize what a horrible mistake it was. because that look stan was giving me while i was on top of his wife, while he was under bills, told a story. a story of how these days were over. a story about how he can't take this anymore. about how he was gonna get the rifle over the mantel and start blasting away. starting by standing behind me and shooting the top of my head and her face with the same bullet. turning around and taking out poor bill and my wife. listening to the newly made widow scream out "holy shit!.. that was a great album. who brought it over?"
"oh, jimmy did. i should have thanked him. it's super cool."
and than they walk over the bloody mess, naked.
go towards the terrace.
hold hands.
then fly away.
well... it could happen.

FLY PAN AM LIVE
Canada is the best thing to happen to the states since Mexico. bringing us sugar, zinc, precious metals and Constellation Records.
buying gybe's "slow riot for new zero kanada" was the best purchase ever. it came with two amazing tracks, an unusual case and a mail order catalog for constellation records. on this piece of paper i came across names like do make say think, exhaust, hrsta, sofa and FLY PAN AM.
fly pan am was a punk band disguised as a super cool artsy fartsy band.
check out this live recording.
check out the screams towards the end of "bruelz suivant, suivante!".
they're black metal howls!

SWIRLIES

Swirlies -- "Sounds of Sebring" (Excerpt -- live in Philly) from Matt Graves on Vimeo.
Swirlies "Bell" Mercury Lounge NYC Feb 27th 2009 from sean Dack on Vimeo.
this is probably my favorite band of all time. the perfect blend of shoegaziness, punk, experimentation, sweetness, aggressiveness and pop that has the power to make my broke ass fly to nyc for two nights and one day just because i'm always scared that i'll never see them again.
when i first saw them here in l.a., i went to both spaceland shows and drove the next night to see them in san diego at the casbah with my friends nana, adrian and eric (pastilla). i just couldn't believe that these icons of my life were actually here! in california! that they would play shows in small clubs and i would gleefully be there.
the shows were imperfect technically (gear busting up, bass player ((not andy))falling over because he was too drunk, awkward silences after applauses) but perfect in the sense that it allowed me to see that they were just human too. that they, these gods in my mind, had the same kinda problems at shows that i had come across. sure its silly to think that they wouldn't but you have to understand that they truly were and still are the coolest shit ever to me. the music they have made is a soundtrack to many a happy time in my life. i could play their records anytime and it would just cheer me up. i don't think theres anything else that can guarantee that. besides "Start Today" by Gorilla Biscuits but thats another story...
you can download most of their stuff from their website.
check it out. you won't be sorry, i promise.

GIRLS ARE SHORT
'CONTACT KISS' is a very special album by a canadian duo by the name of GIRLS ARE SHORT.
they went and recorded a bunch of songs and had some local teenagers from Mississauga contribute vocals . a very nice mix of swirlies' type guitar strumming , samples, live and programmed drums. what kind of music is this? well... the best kind! overall an elctronic upbeat sound filled with uplifting vibes that you can dance to and take over the world with.
last song is missing.

Feu Thérèse
this is probably my favorite band out there right now. Feu Thérèse are from Montreal and came from the ashes of Fly Pan Am, my previous favorite band out there until they broke up. the mix of old synthesizers, steady but interesting still drums, spacey delayed guitars, funky bass and deep french vocals with the occasional higher pitch in the background is what i consider to be the closest perfect dark pop music ever. you just have to listen to it. i haven't listened to sometime this good yet since it came out.

AxRxM
what can i say about these boys? well... maybe that they're not boys anymore but MEN!!! she's dead!!! first played with them when it was eddie, omar, sergio and al in a lil' cafe in san berdo called LYRICS about 8 or 9 years ago. (they had to be around 14 or 15 years of age) they set up and i was like, "look at these kids! i bet its some blink 182 stuff..." boy was i wrong! these guys played with a fury that took me by the balls. fast, aggressive, noisy (which i don't think was their intention at the time) and bratty. as if someone didn't serve them pancakes that morning and they've been butt hurt ever since. the second time we played together was in my basement room when i lived with my parents. this room was about 6 feet wide by 11 feet in length! there was about 20 people in that room!!! that was the night al grabbed my lil' brother albert's ass thinking it was his girlfriends. i think my brother was touched, no pun intended. AxRxM has been through some line up changes adding the very gifted tom on bass at first and switching off to drums when al joined the army. sergio left to new mexico then to arizona for a good 3 years or so but is now back in cali to resume guitar duties and to pursue film school. eddie and omar have been the backbone of this party on wheels since jumpstreet. its hard to believe that they were a bunch of straight edge kids when we met them. i blame it on carl for peer pressuring them to smoke buds and drink 40's. but that combination go's so well on a windy fontana night in a garage thats full of guitars, drums and mics. every chance i get to play with them it's an honor. they are and forever will be or lil' brothers.
