AMBER ASYLUM "THE NATURAL PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE"

in one of my top 3 shows ever, this band played.
i show up to the showcase theater with sal.
we walk in to be assaulted by some dudes from santa fe, nm in the form of some loud ass hardcore punk.
dreads flying everywhere as they flew everywhere themselves.
this is the first time i saw logical nonsense.
as a matter of fact, it was the first time i saw any of these bands.
up next was a three piece.
huge drum set up, a keyboard and a guitar.
huh?
the drummer looked like jesus and played like the devil himself, i forgot how the keyboard player looked like but that has to be because of my fixation on the ordinary lookin' guy that was on vocal and guitar duties.
i've never seen that kind of passion before!
he sounded scarier than david vincent! (again, i was 14)
he was screamin' with all of his soul, with every fiber of his being.
swallowing the mic as he sang!
sweating like he's just been in a 15 round boxing match.
from that day on i've been a devote desciple of today is the day.
after they were done and my heart started to calm down i started to think, "okay, whats next? let's go come on!"
being in the pit expecting the last band to go on i notice a cello on the stage.
huh?
then a beautiful redheaded metal chick wearing a venom shirt with cut off sleeves touches my shoulder to say excuse me as she walked towards the stage.
she gets on and picks up a violin!
the stage fills up with the cello player, another violinist, a drummer, and some dude on the ebow guitar.
what the hell?
i did not expect to be blown away the way i did after today is the day.
wrong!
they played as beautiful and powerful as any of the other bands that night.
haunting is the best way to discribe it. (i don't want to get into how it made me travel transcendtally. that would be gay.)
simply awesome. and i don't you use that word ever. (thanks to eddie izzard)

after all that was a band called... neurosis?
yeah thats right.
neurosis.
huh... almost forgot about them.
they were ok.
ha

definitly in the top three shows list.
i like to think i lost my virginity to that show.

the songs played that night by kris force, martha burns, blaise smith, timothy north and steve von till (that guy on ebow) are in this album.

beautiful to the max

BOREDOMS "SOUL DISCHARGE"

i remember seeing, in one of sal's many metal maniacs, an article on some japanese bands.
two in particular. s.o.b and the boredoms.
i was like, "what the hell is goin' over there? metal in japan?".
i was 13 or 14, man, gimme a break!
i saw that there was a girl in the boredoms.
which fascinated me since i've always liked "rockin' chicks".
there was no internet available to paupers like us in those days so that was it... some cool looking bands from japan that surely was hard to get a hold of any of their records in fontana.

one day sal told me he was going to rhino records in claremont.
i asked my parents if i could go and they said no.
bummed out i thought i would just give sal 2 bucks so he could bring me back something from the used tape section.
i always trust sal to have something cool on deck.
but nothing could have prepared me for what was to come.
i'm not sure if it was later on that same day or the next but when i saw him i said, "hey, where's my tape?"
he went inside his house and came back out with "soul discharge"!
holy shit!
that cool looking japanese metal band.
in my hands.
he was like, "yeah, man, you'll like it. its noisy."
noisy metal?
put the tape in the deck, took a breath, pushed play and was blown to smitherfuckinreens!
but this wasn't metal!
this was punk like a muthafucker!
the weirdest punk i've ever heard!
i loved it!
i got lost in it!
everything was perfect here... the two drums on the same beat but not, guitar, bass and those vox!
HOLY SHIT THOSE VOX!!!
both eye and yoshimi!
!!!!!!!!

ok.
calm.

this is the japanese release that came out in '99.
difference between this one and my '89 tape is 5 extra track.
the first and last four.
have fun with this.
play it super loud and scare the shit out of yourself.

my most prized tape that i own.

SOUL DISCARGA

CRASS "PENIS ENVY"

oh how i loved my high school sweet heart's bedroom.
experiencing so many things like smoking weed with a girl, kissing after smoking weed with a girl, getting my legs naired (not too proud of that), listening to lil' adam run around the house talking about lizards, and listening to great tunes.
i would bring over maybe some sonic youth, swirlies or skinny puppy. we would blaze it up and than mack down.
after a while, if it started to get heavy, she might put on some "le sexorcisto", megadeth or some "pretty hate machine" just to keep the mood right.
but one day she put on this tape that had a familiar symbol on it.
a symbol that i had only seen once before.
in sal's room, my neighbor at the time, on an album called "christ the album".
i probably said something like, "heeeeey is this crass? where's steve ignorant? this is the shit, let's make out!"
all i remember after that was that we loved to make out to that record... cocteau twins came later.

oh btw... this is my favorite punk album.
baddest shit they put out, in my book.
and not just because all the mackin' either.

vvrssnn "[[[[VVRSSNN]]]]"

FUCKING LISTEN TO THIS!
precious moments await you.

Adam Forkner

BAL-SAGOTH "BATTLE MAGIC"

the third song "a take from the deep woods" is the first song i heard from these dudes.
it was on a comp. that i came across in '99. even now i still listen to it and picture rocky training for the fight of his life. a "gonna fly now" for metal dudes.
people always clown at first, saying, "hahaha! what the fuck is this?" but it never fails... they end up asking me later on in the car, "hey... put that dumb ass fantasy black metal band... that shit is bad as fuck."
